Dear colleagues around the globe,
Following the very successful meeting of 2009, we are glad to announce that the Jewish Music Research Centre will continue to coordinate the music sections and events at the 16th World Congress of Jewish Studies to be held at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem on July 28 – August 1, 2013. We are glad to conduct this event once again in cooperation with the American Society for Jewish Music. Sessions and panels will address all aspects of and approaches to music in Jewish cultures and societies (including music in Israel), in the past, present and future as well as general issues related to music history and ethnography that are related to Jewish subjects, images or ideas. This time we are marking the opening of the Yovel (fiftieth anniversary) of the foundation of the Jewish Music Research Centre and the National Sound Archives in 1964. Your participation on this event as lecturer or listener is most welcome.
A program committee for music was established (acting as a sub-committee of the Languages, Literatures and the Arts Section), including Dr. Abigail Wood (Haifa University), Dr. Gila Flam (National Library of Israel), Dr. Boaz Tarsi (American Society for Jewish Music), Dr. Amalia Kedem (National Library of Israel and Jewish Music Research Centre), Naomi Cohn-Zentner (Jewish Music Research Center) and Prof. Emeritus Eliyahu Schleifer (Hebrew Union College- JIR / Jewish Music Research Centre). Ms. Sari Salis (Jewish Music Research Centre) will act as coordinator. All logistic and technical matters (registration forms, inscription fees, accommodations and travel information, etc.) are taken care directly by the WCJS. Please check the brand new website of the WCJS (www.jewish-studies.org).
As focus for the sessions in the upcoming conference we suggest the following topics:
Jewish Music Documentation: Scope, Trends, Ideologies and Boundaries
Globalized Jewish Music: Challenges for Research, Education and Creativity
Free papers are also most welcomed. The program will include concerts, workshops and exhibitions; we are open to suggestion for these events too.
Please save these dates in your calendar. The formal call for papers can be downloaded from the WCJS website. You must register and send your abstract directly to the WCJS with a copy to us please at [email protected].
We look forward to seeing you again in Jerusalem in the summer of 2013/5773.
Yours truly,
Edwin Seroussi, Director
