There is exciting news about the American Society for Jewish Music’s Charlie Bernhaut Collection of Jewish and Cantorial Recordings, which contains more than 17,000 recordings dating from the early twentieth century to the present day. Not only is the process of complete digitization moving ahead, including the recordings, covers, labels and liner notes, but all of this material is also about to become part of a comprehensive, searchable online database which we hope will set a new standard for recorded collections in its capacity to easily access information about each item in the collection.
In addition, we have been sharing materials with the National Library in Israel which digitized nearly 2,500 cassettes from the Bernhaut Collection to fill in gaps in its holdings.
We are also pleased to announce that the Charlie Bernhaut Collection of Jewish and Cantorial Recordings is now be housed at the Center for Jewish History, and that its database will eventually become part of the Center’s online library collections.
Moreover, the Bernhaut Collection database will form the nucleus of an even larger ASJM project entitled The Database of Jewish Music Sound Recordings.
